80% of a student's overall grade in this class results from their performances on assessments. Essentially, if the students do poorly on assessments, they will also do poorly in the class. The homework and daily work will help to prepare students for the upcoming assessments, but they do not guarantee passing grades on the assessments even though they may have done well on the work building up to them.
Assessments are modeled after the standardized tests students are expected to complete this coming year. The assessments might be multiple-choice, but they can also be written. The written assessments seem to be the most difficult of all because they require students to communicate what they know clearly and concisely. This requires a learning curve. The beginning part of the learning process can be painful for many students because restating the questions, writing in complete sentences, and staying on task when answering the questions requires discipline. It is easy for students to get off topic, forget key required elements when answering questions, and writing in complete sentences.
There is hope to restore poor grades. All students can do ONE Correct/Reflect Opportunity (even if they earned a grade in the "A" range). This means they can do the affected assessments a second time by correcting the errors that are wrong and resubmitting them in class within a week of seeing their graded assessments. The new grade is an average of both assessments and will help many students to improve their grades faster.
